OXIDATION POTENTIAL OF THE Ce(III)-Ce(IV) COUPLE AS A FUNCTION OF TEMPERATURE IN PERCHLORIC ACID SOLUTIONS--THERMODYNAMIC PROPERTIES (thesis)
The temperature coefficient of the cerous-ceric oxidation potential was measured in molal perchloric acid. E/sub f/, dE/sub f//dT, DELTA H, DELTA F, DELTA S, and DELTA C/sub p/ were determined for the reactions (1) Ce(OH)/sup 3+/ + 1/2 H/sub 2/ = Ce/sup 3+/ + H/sub 2/O and (2) Ce/sup 4+/ + 1/2 H/sub 2/ = Ce/ sup 3+/ + H/sup +/ at 25 deg C and a total cerium c oncentration of zero. E/sub f/ for reaction (1) is in good agreement with the value found by Sherrill, King, and Spooner. DELTA H, DELTA F, and DELTA S values for reaction (1) at ceric perchlorate concentrations of 0.005 and 0.025 molal were also determined and found to be in good agreement with the calorimetric values of Evans and Fontana. Evans and Fontana worked with ceric perchlorate concentrations of 0.005 and 0.025 molal, respectively, in half molal perchloric acid. From the temperature coefficient of the equilibrium constant K/sub D/, DELTA H, DELTA F, and DELTA S were determined for the reaction 2 Ce(OH)/sup 3+/ = Ce-O-Ce/sup 6+/ + H/sub 2/O at 25 deg C. These results were compared with those of Hardwick and Robertson. (auth)
