Ader in the J. Phys. et Radium 15: 60, 191(1954) and 17: alpha particles for each alpha decay. These alpha particles have a range of 100to 300 mu in photoemulsions (12 to 25 Mev) and are thought to be due to spontaneous or forced triple fission. A specially constracted ionization chamber was set up to count the long-range alpha particles in the presence of ordinary alpha radiation. A 10 mg sample of Pu/sup 239/ was deposited on an aluminum disk having a density of 0.5 mg/cm/sup 2/, and was covered with an aluminum foil 28 V thick. The 70 mu g sample of Po/sup 210/ was electrodeposited on a nickel plate, and was covered with a tin foil 15.3 mu thick and with two aluminum foils having a totai thickness of 14.4 mu in order to avoid the interference from an ( alpha ,p) reaction on the aluminum. The total count rates were found to be 0.55 plus or minus 0.09 counts. hr/sup -1/ for the Pu /sup 239/ sample, and 1.0 plus or minus 0.1 counts - hr/sup -1/ for the Po/sup 210/ sample for 10 to 15 Mev alpha particles. It was concluded that Pu/sup 239/ emits <10/sup -10/ long-range alpha particles per alpha decay, and Pu/sup 210/ emits <7 x 10/ sup -13/ long-range alpha particles per alpha decay at the 95% confidence level.
