TRILAURYLAMINE EXTRACTION: SPECTROGRAPHIC DETERMINATION OF TANTALUM IN PLUTONIUM
Ion exchange and tributylphosphate extraction separations of tantalum from plutonium were tried. A trilaurylamine extraction-spectrographic method for the determination of tantalum in plutonium was developed. Plutonium was dissolved in HCl and separated by amine extraction from the undissolved tantalum and from any tantalum that might have dissolved. HF was then added to dissolve all the tantalum and the solution was concentrated by evaporation. Niobium internal standard was added and tantalum determined in the aqueous phase by graphite spark spectrographic analysis. Concentrations of tantalum as low as 50 ppm in 50 mg of plutonium were determined with an estimated relative standard deviation of plus or minus 7%. (auth)
