Title: Cation Exchange Separation of Alkaline Earth Elements with Hydrochloric Acid Containing Methanol (in Japanese)

Journal Article · · Nippon Kagaku Zasshi (Journal of the Chemistry Society of Japan, Pure Chemistry Section)

Ion-exchange separation of Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba with HCl containing methanol as eluant was studied. Exchangers used were Amberlite IR-120, Diaion SK # 1, Dowex 50-X1, and Dowex 50W-X8, each having similar exchange capacity except Dowex 50-X1. As the methanol content of the eluant increased from 0 to 20 vol%, the rate of elution was lowered. Furthermore, the higher the atomic weight of alkaline earth element, the greater the effect of methanol on the rate of elution became. Using this effect of methanol, alkaline earth elements such as Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba can be separated more sharply than the case where hydrochloric acid alone is used. For example, when Dowex 50W-X8 is used as an exchanger Mg is separated from Ca with 0.7 N HCl or with 0.8 N HCl containing 10% methanol, Ca from Sr with 0.8 N HCl containing 20% methanol, and Sr from Ba with 1.2 N HCl, respectively. In the case of Dowex 50-X1, the effect of methanol addition to HCl on the separation of these elements was not so remarkable, because of its low specific exchange capacity.
