The spreading process of oil on a free surface can be roughly broken into three stages; the third being that governed by the balance between the surface tension and the viscous force. In order to address the general feature of this surface tension/viscous force interaction a simplified model problem which consists of pair vortices under the free surface as a flow driver and a thin surfactant layer is examined numerically. The flow field is solved by using a standard finite difference scheme and the interface is traced by a front tracking method. The surfactant is assumed to be immiscible and its conservation equation on the interface is solved simultaneously. Effect of surfactant to the base flow and vice versa is discussed briefly.
