This paper addresses crude oil production in two water depths: 500 m (1,650 ft.) and 1,000 m (3,300 ft.). A minimum size tension leg based deep water wellhead support platform, the Surface Completion Floater (SCF) has been conceived and analyzed. Following the presentation of system characteristics, the SCF plus its tanker based Floating Production, Storage and Offloading system (FPSO) is compared on an economic basis with a small TLP with a surface completed well system and a semisubmersible-based subsea completed well system both also working in conjunction with an FPSO. The evaluation of these three deepwater production scenarios considers both capital investment and lifetime operating costs.
