That anaerobic glycolysis of tumor cells is affected by irradiation was confirmed with Yoshida ascites tumor cells. However, anaerobic giycolysis of these cells is only transiently inhibited by x irradiation, and is restored after a lapse of time. In the case of in vitro irradiation, inhibition is observed after three min and glycolysis is restored to the initial level after 40 min. To investigate possible biological differences between cells with glycolysis inhibited and restored, Yoshida ascites tumor cells were investigated for transplantability. A cell suspension was injected intraperitoneally into four groups of 10 rats each. After 28 days observation, transplantation rate (death rate) and average survival time were obtained. The four groups were as follows: injected with nonirradiated tumor cells shaken for 3 min; injected with nonlrradiated tumor cells shaken for 40 min; injected with tumor cells irradiated with 5000 r and shaken for 3 min (glycolysis inhibited); and injected with tumor cells irradiated with 5000 r and shaken for 40 min (glycolysis restored). Results indicate that: transplantability of tumor cells is not affected by physicochemical treatment; irradiation with 5000 r markedly lowers transplartability; there is no direct relation between inhibition of anaerobic glycolysis and the transplantability of tumor cells.
