Title: Deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by polarized {sup 3}He and the study of the neutron spin structure

The neutron longitudinal and transverse asymmetries {ital A}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1} and {ital A}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2} have been extracted from deep inelastic scattering of polarized electrons by a polarized {sup 3}He target at incident energies of 19.42, 22.66, and 25.51 GeV. The measurement allows for the determination of the neutron spin structure functions {ital g}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}({ital x},{ital Q}{sup 2}) and {ital g}{sup {ital n}}{sub 2}({ital x},{ital Q}{sup 2}) over the range 0.03{lt}{ital x}{lt}0.6 at an average {ital Q}{sup 2} of 2 (GeV/{ital c}){sup 2}. The data are used for the evaluation of the Ellis-Jaffe and Bjorken sum rules. The neutron spin structure function {ital g}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}({ital x},{ital Q}{sup 2}) is small and negative within the range of our measurement, yielding an integral {integral}{sub 0.03}{sup 0.6}{ital g}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}({ital x}){ital dx}={minus}0.028{plus_minus}0.006 (stat){plus_minus}0.006 (syst). Assuming Regge behavior at low {ital x}, we extract {Gamma}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}={integral}{sup 1}{sub 0}{ital g}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}({ital x}){ital dx}={minus}0.031{plus_minus}0.006 (stat){plus_minus}0.009 (syst). Combined with previous proton integral results from SLAC experiment E143, we find {Gamma}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}{minus}{Gamma}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}=0.160{plus_minus}0.015 in agreement with the Bjorken sum rule prediction {Gamma}{sup {ital p}}{sub 1}{minus}{Gamma}{sup {ital n}}{sub 1}=0.176{plus_minus}0.008 at a {ital Q}{sup 2} value of 3 (GeV/{ital c}){sup 2} evaluated using {alpha}{sub {ital s}}=0.32{plus_minus}0.05. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
