Multi-strange baryon and anti-baryon productions in S+Pb collisions at 200 GeV/n
- Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, CA (United States)
Under conditions of extreme temperature and density, hadronic matter is predicted to undergo a phase transition into a deconfined state consisting of quasi-free quarks and gluons: the quark-gluon plasma. Such conditions might be prevalent in the collision of medium-heavy ions at ultra-relativistic energies. As a consequence of the liberated color degrees of freedom an unusually high strange quark density is expected at the freezeout time of the plasma. This is of consequence for the production of multi-strange baryons and antibaryons emerging from these reactions. To this end, the production of E{sup -} and E{sup +} have been measured using the NA36 Time Projection Chamber in S+Pb collisions at 200 GeV/n at the CERN SPS. A total yield of approximately 100 E{sup -} and E{sup +} decays have currently been reconstructed from the data. The production ratios of E{sup -}, E{sup +}, {Lambda} and {Lambda} have been studied in order to provide important insight into the underlying reaction dynamics. This is potentially most interesting for central collisions where plasma effects may be observed.
