Title: Case study: Improved leachate extraction and reliability in a combined leachate and landfill gas extraction system at the Winnebago County Snell Road Landfill, Oshkosh, Wisconsin

The Snell Road Landfill located in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, is a closed 110-acre municipal/industrial landfill owned by Winnebago County. The site contains approximately 4.5 million cubic yards of municipal solid waste (MSW), paper mill sludge, and industrial waste. The approximate composition of waste is 25 percent MSW, 30 percent industrial, and 45 percent paper mill sludge. The filling activities resulted in large pockets of paper mill sludge being deposited within the landfill with little or no mixing with other waste components. An active gas extraction system was installed during 1988 through 1990 including a flare, compressor, and 3.0 megawatt turbine/generator. Landfill gas (LFG) is beneficially used to generate electricity which is sold to the local utility. The gas collection system contains 77 gas extraction wells, 34 of which contained electric submersible leachate extraction pumps. Based on boring logs from the gas wells, many saturated layers of MSW and paper mill sludge were encountered throughout the depth of the landfill. In addition, clay layers were periodically encountered. The saturated layers of MSW and sludge were encountered above the clay layers, indicating perched layers of leachate. Because of the non- homogeneous nature of the landfill and perched layers of leachate, leachate extraction pumping has been difficult. In less than one year, the electric pumps and controllers required extensive maintenance and the majority of the pumps failed due to corrosion, over-heating, clogging, and controller malfunctions. During 1995, the electric submersible pumps were replaced with pneumatic leachate extraction pumps. Additional pumps were installed in gas extraction wells with a history of high leachate heads.
