A lithology independent through casing porosity and water saturation model LIPS
Due to low oil prices in particular and the need for increasing profitability of a reservoir in general, low cost but reliable techniques for formation evaluation and reservoir monitoring continue to be some of the major goals of the oil industry. Low cost is considered to be a relative term since it depends on the developing stage of the reservoir. Cost savings in the development stage is different from the stage of infill drilling which, in turn, is different from reservoir surveillance and field management. In this paper, a new and different look at the cased hole log interpretation techniques for formation evaluation and reservoir surveillance is introduced and discussed and an application in two low invasion cored wells is included. Using the cased hole logs alone, a Lithology Independent Porosity and water Saturation model (LIPS) is developed and tested in many reservoirs all over the world. The idea is new and different and it requires some background about the physics of the cased hole logging tools namely; thermal neutron tool or CNL, epithermal neutron tool and the Pulsed Neutron Capture or PNC type tools, e.g., TDT.
