Title: Assessment of extruded 345-kV cable technology. Final report

Prequalification tests were performed in 1995 at Hydro-Quebec`s Research Institute on XLPE cable systems in partnership with three international cable manufacturers, Pirelli, Fujikura and Alcatel. The long-term test (6,000 h) was performed at 345 kV (phase-to-ground) and once completed, the three cable systems passed the lightning (1,300 kV) and switching (900 kV) impulse tests. After the successful completion of the prequalification tests, EPRI, Hydro-Quebec and the cable manufacturers agreed on an additional special engineering test of 19 cycles up to 500 kV (phase-to-ground). The two cable manufacturers who completed the special engineering test agreed to continue and performed a long-term test of 6,000 h at 500 kV. One of them actually completed 1 year at 500 kV as recommended by CIGRE Working Group 21.03. EPRI and Hydro-Quebec agreed on their end to monitor the partial discharge activity during the long-term test using a commercial recording system. It was shown that it is possible to retrofit couplers on the cross-bonding cable of already installed transmission-type cables and perform PD measurements from the cross-bonding cable by eliminating undesired electromagnetic interference with a combination of frequency filtering and time domain gating. The sensitivity of the High Frequency Current Transformer coupler was determined to be in the range of 65 pC.
