Of the coal produced in the US, approximately 80 percent is used for electric power generation, and 10 to 15 percent of this is recovered as coal combustion by-products. Approximately 100 million tons of fly ash is generated annually. When coal combustion by-products are placed in abandoned or inactive surface and underground coal mines, they may react chemically with naturally occurring fluids, such as rain, groundwater and acid mine drainage. The Department of Energy is investigating the possible release of trace elements by a series of column leaching tests. A one-kg fly ash sample is placed in each of seven 5-cm by 1m acrylic columns. The material is leached at a nominal rate of 250 ml/d for 60 days. Lixiviants include deionized water, artificial groundwater, synthetic precipitation, and dilute solutions of acetic acid, sodium carbonate, sulfuric acid, and ferric chloride. Although leachate is analyzed for pH, acidity/alkalinity, iron, calcium, aluminum, manganese, and magnesium, the primary focus is on 12 trace elements from arsenic to zinc. Leaching tests have been completed on 20 fly ash samples. Data is analyzed as the amount extracted with respect to the concentration in the solid, as well as the extraction rate and the average extraction efficiency with respect to the volume of lixiviant.
