  1. New York State Electric and Gas Corp., Binghamton, NY (United States)

New York State Electric and Gas Corporation operates three Phase 1 and eight Phase 2 coal-fired generating units located in upstate, central New York. Continuous emission monitor systems consisting of SO{sub 2}, NO{sub x}, and CO{sub 2} analyzers controlled by a programmable logic controller and a personal computer for plant local data acquisition and handling were installed at the Phase 1 sites in 1991. Data acquisition and handling tasks are performed by a computer system which uses a programmable logic controller and a multi-tasking computer at the plant local level and the New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) Corporate mainframe computer for US EPA 40CFR75 reporting requirements. The programmable logic controller collects instantaneous monitor data along with a data status code indicating system mode during the data point collection. The plant local computer obtains data from the programmable logic controller, displays data on a real time and fifteen minute summary basis, displays calibration data, stores all data for future retrieval, and serves as the interface to transmit data to the Corporate mainframe computer. Additional computer terminals are installed in the plant control rooms to enable the operations staff access to continuous, real time indications of both emissions data and monitor system status. The mainframe computer stores original fifteen minute data files, develops a database of one hour data with associated data status codes, provides data code edit accessibility, sends hourly data averages to Power Supply for NO{sub x} Compliance Tracking System use, displays data in both a menu select and a user requested format, and may be used to download data into personal computer spreadsheet programs for further statistical analysis.
