This paper presents an overview of the initial investigations on the dynamic wave loading and progressive strength deterioration of a stranded tanker. The subject is a double hull tanker, which has drifted aground on a pinnacle in an exposed area with waves. Two methods are used to estimate the wave-induced loads: a static approach and a dynamic approach, which uses a 3-D diffraction method in the determination of the hull motions and girder loads. Local damage; resulting from the dynamically varying loads and motions is computed using an explicit finite element scheme. A major objective is to determine the feasibility of estimating numerically damage progress and time-dependent residual strength.
