Over the past few years, the authors have investigated the synthesis of isotropic pitch-based carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers from various types of starting material, including petroleum pitches, shale oils and coal liquids. They have found that both shale oil and coal liquids offer advantages in terms of the simplicity of precursor preparation, more facile processing and unique properties of the fiber products, which can reduce costs and extend the use of these materials into novel applications. In more recent studies, they have shown that both shale oil and coal liquid-derived activated carbon fibers exhibit higher reactivity for the oxidative removal of sulfur oxides at ambient temperature than commercial fibers with similar surface area. The coal-based fibers can also be incorporated into composites for molecular sieving applications. The aims of the present study are, (1) to determine the feasibility of synthesizing isotropic pitch-based carbon fibers and activated carbon fibers from a range of coal liquids, which represent different coal types and processes; (2) to make a preliminary evaluation of fiber synthesis conditions and the structure and properties of fiber products; and (3) to examine the relationships between the processing conditions and the properties of fiber precursors.
