Synthesis of high density insensitive energetic tetraazapentalene derivatives

An improved nitration procedure has been developed for the synthesis of y-Tacot. The synthesis of y-DBBD has been completed in three steps from y-Tacot in 37% yield. y-DBBD was found to be thermally stable up to 274 C (decomposed) and insensitive to impact (hammer blow). Nitration of z-DBBD and y-DBBD gave carbonyl derivatives resulting from in situ hydrolysis/oxidation of the corresponding tetranitro derivatives z-TBBD and y-TBBD, respectively. [y-Tacot = 2,4,8,10-tetranitrobenzotriazolo[1,2-a]benzotriazol-6-ium inner salt; y-DBBD = 2,10-dinitro[1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-e][1,2,5]oxadizolo[3{prime},4{prime}:5,4]benzotriazolo[1,2-a]benzotriazol-6-ium inner salt 3,9-dioxide; z-DBBD = 4,11-dinitro[1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3,4-e][1,2,5]oxadiazolo[3{prime},4{prime}:4,5]benzotriazolo[2,1-a]benzotriazol-6-ium inner salt 1,8-dioxide].
