Resonant photo-pumping has been suggested as an alternative to collisional excitation and recombination for the creation of a population inversion for use in laboratory soft x-ray lasers. In such a scheme, a radiative transition energy in the pump ion nearly coincides with the excitation energy of the lasant ion. Calculations have identified numerous such pairs of ions. Though some such pairs follow trends in an isoelectronic sequence, others are chance occurrences. The calculations of the energies are reliable to approximately 1 part in 10{sup 3}, whereas the success of the photo-pumping scheme requires better than a part in 10{sup 4}. Thus, spectroscopic measurements are required to determine the viability of a predicted resonance. This work presents data taken on the LLNL EBIT to search for the possible photo-pumping of the 3p-3s lasing transitions in Ne-like ions of elements with Z=30-40 and the 4d-4p lasing transitions in Ni-like ions of elements Z=25-75. In addition, candidate pump lines were measured in various H-, He-, Ne- and Ni-like ions. To date, the most promising candidate is Ni-like Pt pumping Ne-like Rb at 2512 eV. The line energies differ by 0.4 {+-} 0.1 eV or by 160 ppm.
