Columbia Gulf replaces pipeline under Mississippi River
Preparing pipe for service involves a careful balancing act between technology and the environment. The more precise the balance achieved, the better the odds favor long-lasting service. Columbia Gulf Transmission Co.`s recent installation of 5,000 feet of pipe under the Mississippi River northeast of Lake Providence, LA, provides a worthy example of just how this balance is achieved. The previous installation under the river consisted of two 24-inch diameter pipelines which failed during severe flooding. Exact cause of the failure remains unknown, but Columbia Gulf decided that a single 30-inch diameter pipeline was needed for replacement. It would have to be situated well below the river bed to protect it from future damage. Directional drilling would ensure that the pipe would be placed at a minimum depth of 30 feet below the river bottom, and in some places, to a depth of 140 feet. This paper reviews the design, construction conditions and corrosion control technologies being used by this company in the completion of this crossing.
