Guidelines simplify horizontal directionally drilled crossings
- Drilled Crossings, Inc., Arnaudville, LA (United States)
Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a proven, preferred method for installing pipelines and conduits under obstacles such as rivers and estuaries. As with most investments of this magnitude, the pipeline operator or owner expects this installation to be a permanent (50 years or more), quality product with minimal maintenance at an economically viable cost. Although most pipeline companies have an inhouse staff of engineers that can accomplish such a task, it is recommended that a competent and reputable HDD consultant be engaged to assist in analyzing and designing of complex, unique, or difficult crossings. This paper reviews the steps in characterizing the site, the water depth associated with the crossing and other design considerations which must be considered prior to drilling.
