Spontaneous excitation of QPESIIH instabilities in weakly ionized two-ion plasmas with different ion temperatures
- Univ. of Nis (Yugoslavia)
Contrary to earlier theories based on hydrodynamics, quasi-perpendicular (with respect to magnetization field B{sub 0}) electrostatic ion-ion hybrid (QPESIIH) waves, characterized by modal frequencies close to the Buchsbaum frequency {omega}{sub B}, may also be studied kinetically. Much as in the case of analogous ion-cyclotron (QPESIC) waves, this latter approach predicts both the existence of the QPESIIH waves in the vicinity of higher-order Buchsbaum harmonics ({omega} {approximately} N{omega}{sub B}; N = 1,2,3{hor_ellipsis}) and the appearance of the pertaining instabilities (waves of growing amplitude) caused by a sufficiently large electron drift parallel to B{sub 0}. In the present work, the process of excitation of the QPESIIH instabilities in the domain of large wavelengths ({nu}{sub e} {much_gt} k{sub {parallel}}{upsilon}{sub Te} and {omega}{nu}{sub e} {much_lt} k{sub {parallel}}{sup 2}{upsilon}{sub Te}{sup 2}) was studied theoretically for weakly ionized two-ion plasmas, assuming that the two ion species have different temperatures (e.g., ionosphere, stellar atmospheres). Kinetic equations with BGK model collision integrals were used, and the assumption that {nu}{sub e}/{nu}{sub i} = {upsilon}{sub Te}/{upsilon}{sub Ti} ({open_quotes}strict{close_quotes} billiard-ball model for the collisions with the neutrals) was adopted in evaluating the threshold drifts.
