A coupled-channel approach for charmonia levels is formulated, based on the 3P0 model for pair creation. Special attention is paid to the levels above the open-charm threshold. It is shown, in particular, that the coupling of the 23P1 c-barc state to the DD* channel generates a well-pronounced near-threshold state. Interrelation between this state and the recently discovered mesonic state X(3872) is discussed.
