The iodine-sulfur thermochemical cycle for hydrogen production takes place in very corrosive environments. To evaluate the corrosion rate of structural materials, corrosion tests on Bunsen reaction environments were conducted using glass apparatus, which focused on welded area corrosions and crevice corrosions for the fabrication of equipment. Prepared test specimens of tantalum and zirconium were exposed to solutions consisting of HI, H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}, I{sub 2} and H{sub 2}O at 120 degrees C for 100 or 500 hours at the atmospheric pressure. Two types of solutions were employed to simulate the process environments of the Bunsen reaction. The compositions of the solutions were H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}:HI:H{sub 2}O:I{sub 2}=0.50:0.001:0.498:0.001 (weight ratio, H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}-rich phase) and H{sub 2}SO{sub 4}:HI:H{sub 2}O:I{sub 2}=0.001:0.10:0.099:0.8 (weight ratio, HI-rich phase). After the exposure, the corrosion rates were obtained by the weight loss of each specimen. For the tantalum, their welded area corrosions and crevice corrosions exhibit appropriate corrosion resistance (below 0.02 g/m{sup 2} hr) in both solutions. As for the zirconium, higher corrosion rates (0.02 to 0.05 g/m{sup 2} hr) were observed in the HI-rich phase on the crevice corrosions. Additionally, pitting corrosions were found on Zr after 500 hours of immersion. (authors)
