A computer controlled data acquisition system for a crossed electron-ion collision experiment
- Univ. of North Texas, Denton, TX (United States); and others
An automated data acquisition system for controlling a crossed-beam electron-ion collision apparatus is described. The system is configured around an HP-UNIX workstation with IEEE-488 and RS-232 interfaces. At the heart of the system is a CAMAC crate with a high speed GPIB interface. A 16-bit programmable digital waveform generator (DWG) module provides the timing and control signals for the experiment. The DWG module controls electron beam switching, sequences for the stepper motor indexer for making the beam profile measurements and beam overlap control, and the gating signals for the scalers. A digital I/O module controlling a reed relay matrix helps to monitor the ion beam signal at over 12 key locations using a single picoammeter. The full floating electron gun power supplies are voltage programmed using a 12-bit DAC module talking with the computer through a GPIB extender using a high speed fiber optic link.
