Title: A simple dispensing/injection system for P.E.T.

Significant quantities (>5500 mCi) EOS of radioactive [F-18]FDG are produced daily at clinical and research PET Centers. 370 MBq (10 mCi) or less are injected per patient. Radiochemists, radiopharmacists and technologists are subjected to high exposures during dispensing of individual doses. A simple, shielded, combined dispensing and injection system has been devised to overcome this problem and is based on extensive experience with a somewhat similar [O-15] water injection device. The system consists of two spiral coils of sterile polyethylene tubing (1.5 mm ID) coaxially configured within a cylindrical lead shield. A syringe (S1) is connected through a 1 m long tube to the input of the inner coil. A 3-way valve connects the inner coil and the outer coil to a second syringe (S2). S2 is attached to the 3-way valve through a second 1 m long tube. The exit of the outer coil is connected to a check valve and sterile vented filter. This in turn is attached to the appropriate site for patient injection. Each coil can be independently lowered into a standard dose calibrator for accurate determination of injected dose (outer coil) and remaining activity for subsequent doses (inner coil). Initially, FDG activity is pushed into the inner coil. To dispense a dose, the outer coil is lowered into the dose calibrator. S1 pushes 370 MBq (10 mCi) of the total resident FDG activity from the inner coil. To dispense a dose, the outer coil. The outer coil is retracted into the lead shield and the system tranported to the bedside. Manual injection is accomplished by pushing the dose from the outer coil along with 10 ml of saline flush (from S2). A new sterile filter and tubing (patient to injection site) are used for each patient. A Harvard pump can be employed for programmed or automated FDG injection using S2 as a passive syringe. Any PET radiopharmaceutical can be dispensed with this system.
