Conceptual Design Report: Silicon Detector Facility
This project is comprised of a 36 foot extension of the Lab D high-bay building toward Eola Road and filling of the enlarged high-bay with class 100000 cleanrooms. The expansion will add approximately 1,700 square feet to the high-bay bringing it to a total of 4,900 square feet; the new cleanrooms will occupy some 2,300 square feet of floor space. The expansion of the high-bay will match the height, style, and appearance of the existing structure. Lab D presently houses the Research Division Silicon Detector Facility. An important goal of the Facility is to provide equipment, space, and personnel toward the assembly and testing of the silicon vertex detectors for Fermilab's two major collider experiments, CDF and D0. The planned systems represent several years of assembly time and must be ready prior to the Run II collider run. Existing cleanroom facilities at the Lab are inadequate for the scope of work required in the silicon system upgrades. Furthermore, by centralizing operations at Lab D the two collider experiments should accrue the benefits of a common set of personnel, equipment, and resources. In addition to the expansion of the high-bay and the installation of two clean rooms there will also be a relocation of a single trailer, the construction of some interconnecting passageways and cleanroom gowning areas. Site work will include the installation of a hardstand on the Eola Road side of the complex. All of this is designed to make the production process as efficient as possible. All other costs associated with the expansion of the Lab D complex, such as connecting the new fire sprinkler systems with the present system at Lab D and electrically connecting the two new cleanrooms, are included within the scope of the project.
