The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory is a large underground neutrino detector which is presently under construction, at a depth of 6800 ft, near Sudbury, Canada. This heavy water detector is designed to study neutrinos from the sun and from other sources with spectral resolution, high counting rates and extremely low backgrounds. The detector and the expected signals from it are discussed in this paper. The important ancillary measurements of backgrounds and detector calibration are outlined. {copyright} {ital 1995} {ital American} {ital Institute} {ital of} {ital Physics}.
