Nanostructured Proton Exchange Membrane
One of the most critically important fuel cell components is the membrane. Currently Perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) ionomer-based PEMs (i.e., Nafion®) are used. These membranes are cost-prohibitive, degrade dramatically at low humidification levels (< 50%) and at elevated temperature (>80°C). In addition, a slow degradation of PFSA during fuel cell operation leads to dangerous releases of fluorine compounds to the environment. Under the small business innovation research (SBIR) program the company has designed, developed, produced, and demonstrated low cost nanofiber-reinforced polymer electrolyte membrane that is thin, strong, chemically robust, and does not swell when in contact with water. The membrane has low H2 and O2 permeability a desired feature. The nanofiber-based solution is cost effective, works with existing PEM fuel cell systems manufacturing infrastructure, and all will be manufactured in Chattanooga, TN, USA.
