This work investigates the influence of the substrate roughness on the adherence of plasma sprayed ceramic coatings onto ceramic substrates. The quality of the adherence was determined through fracture mechanics parameters. The K{sub IC} value, the critical stress-intensity factor for a plane-strain fracture in the precracked ceramic-ceramic joint, was measured by three-point bending. The adherence was correlated to the mechanical interlocking of the substrate surface during the formation of the interface coating/substrate.
