Title: Modified Betatron Approach to Electron Cooling

Conference ·
OSTI ID:1579243

What is the longest possible time that a stored electron beam could be used to cool the antiprotons in the Recycler ring? The answer to this question comes from energy conservation. Basically, the random thermal energy removed from the antiproton beam must appear as an increase in the velocity spread of electrons. Since the cooling rate is determined quantitatively by this velocity spread, it turns out that cooling is effectively maintained for one velocity spread growth time.
