Title: Characterization of lead(II) precursors to ferroelectric thin films via solid state

Perovskite phase metal oxides exhibit a variety of interesting properties such as dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and pyroelectric behavior in the crystalline state. These properties result in a number of potential and realized technology important applications. Metal-organic routes to these materials often rely on liquid phase sol-gel chemistry in which the amorphous to crystallization phase transition is generally achieved in a final thermal processing step. This work examines the relationship between the coordination number and geometry of metal-organic lead(II) precursors and their influence on the crystallization behavior of lead-containing perovskite phase metal oxides such at PbTiO{sub 3} and PbZr{sub 0.52}Ti{sub 0.48}O{sub 3}. Solid state {sup 207}Pb NMR spectroscopy is being used as a probe to investigate lead coordination environment as a function of coordination number and geometry in a series of crystalline lead(II) model compounds with oxygen ligands. It is envisaged that the trends observed will enable characterization of the lead environment during the crystallization of these materials. Recent aspects of this work will be discussed.
