Perfluorosulfonate ionomeric (PFSI) membranes such as Du Pont`s Nafion and the Dow PFSIs have been extensively used as a polymeric electrolytes in proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. Investigations of the mass transport parameters of oxygen, diffusion coefficient and solubility, in Nafion were carried out using a novel solid-state electrochemical cell. The activation energy for oxygen diffusion and the heat of solution of oxygen in Nafion were determined from a temperature-dependence study. The Henry`s law constant for oxygen in Nafion was obtained from the pressure dependence on oxygen solubility. The authors are currently investigating the technique of plasma polymerization as a synthetic strategy for developing fluoropolymers with high oxygen solubility and proton conductivity. The conductivity is determined using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The conductivity and water content of these polymers are controlled by varying the extent of sulfonation during the polymerization process.
