Title: Bioremediation bench-scale treatability study of a superfund site containing oily filter cake waste

Wastes generated from oil recycling and solvent recycling operations were stored in several lagoons located at the Superfund site discussed in this paper. One of the source areas of the Superfund site, a former lagoon which contains more than 30,000 cubic yards of oily filter cake waste materials, is the focus of this study. Previous characterization of the filter cake waste material indicates that the concentration of total petroleum hydrocarbons is the most important factor in determining the physical characteristics and treatability of the waste. The land farming approach was selected for the treatment of the oily filter cake waste and its underlying contaminated soil. That is, soil bioreactor experiments were conducted to determine the feasibility of treating the waste material via bioremediation. The waste was pre-treated with a surfactant and other additives to improve the workability of the waste and to enhance the degradation of organic contaminants. Next, the pre-treated waste was slightly wetted and then mixed with pre-grown indigenous aerobic microorganisms and the appropriate nutrients. Sample analyses were conducted by an independent outside laboratory during this 12-week study. Performance parameters included in these analyses are: total petroleum hydrocarbons, volatile organics, semi-volatiles organics, PCBs by the TCLP extraction procedure, and TCLP volatiles, semi-volatiles, and metals. Other, routine laboratory analyses included TOC, oil and grease, nitrogen (ammonia), nitrites, nitrates, ortho-phosphate, pH, plate count, and the standard Microtox Bioassay.
