During the past decade, there has been an explosion in the knowledge of human genetics. Almost 6000 loci are listed in the latest Mendelian Inheritance in Man (MIM) 10th edition; hundreds have been mapped to specific human chromosomes, and listed in the Chromosome Coordinating Meeting (CCM92) 1992. Every week, new reports mapping new genes, or refining the localization of previously mapped ones, are published. Today, this information can be confusing even for veteran geneticists, and the volume of it makes it unusable for clinicians and scientists outside the field of genetics. Thus, the development of a Catalog and Map of Human Genes, that would include only those loci of at least some interest in the field of endocrinology and reproduction, was undertaken. The starting point was to sift the genes reported in CCM92, and to generate a dedicated list of loci. Thereafter, a computer-based updatable gene map was developed. Finally, a permanent scanning of the literature permits detection of changes, and additions to the catalog and map of the desired category of genes. Also, this allows for the generation of timely updates of this database, independently from the publication of future editions of CCM, MIM or similar sources. However, crosschecking with future editions of these publications will also be part of the updating and quality control methodology. As of the end of May, 1994, 685 human genes have been included in the version 94.5 of this endocrine catalog. The chromosome with the most loci was No. 1, and that with the least was No. 13.
