La39Se56 crystallizes in the triclinic P1 space group. The structure is three-dimensional. there are thirty-nine inequivalent La sites. In the first La site, La is bonded to eight Se atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing LaSe8 hexagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of La–Se bond distances ranging from 3.00–3.28 Å. In the second La site, La is bonded to eight Se atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing LaSe8 hexagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of La–Se bond distances ranging from 3.06–3.24 Å. In the third La site, La is bonded to eight Se atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing LaSe8 hexagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of La–Se bond distances ranging from 3.04–3.25 Å. In the fourth La site, La is bonded to eight Se atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing LaSe8 hexagonal bipyramids. There are a spread of La–Se bond distances ranging from 3.03–3.24 Å. In the fifth La site, La is bonded to eight Se atoms to form a mixture of distorted face, edge, and corner-sharing LaSe8 hexagonal bipyramids.
