Advances in cone penetrometer testing for environmental characterization of soil and groundwater
- Holguin, Fahan and Associates, Inc., Ventura, CA (United States)
Because of design limitations, cone penetrometer testing (CPT) has been used only sporadically in environmental investigations, mostly as an add-on to conventional drilling. However, recent advances in specialty probes have allowed the development of comprehensive assessment strategies for remedial investigations. CPT has not previously been capable of collecting information on volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations in soil vapor and hydrostatic characteristics of an aquifer as well as conventional drilling. Two new probes recently developed by Holguin, Fahan and Associates, Inc., (HFA) extend the capabilities of CPT to the collection of soil vapors and hydrogeological data. The first probe continually collects discrete soil vapor samples with depth and analyzes them on a near real-time basis with an on-board gas chromatograph (GC) and/or photoionization detector (PID). The second new probe contains a low-pressure transducer that takes accurate measurements of in-situ hydrostatic head. Therefore, CPT is now capable of completely defining the subsurface stratigraphy, hydrogeology, and the horizontal and vertical extent of impacted soil and groundwater.
