In this paper we report in detail the synthesis and properties of a family of bis(pentamethylcyclopentadienyl)- uranium(IV) arylimido complexes produced from both metathesis and protonation routes and discuss their two electron oxidation reactions with organic azides, amine N-oxides, and nitrous oxide. As part of this study, the solid state structures of the anionic arylimido species [Li(TMED)][({eta}{sup 5}-C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}U- (NC{sub 6}H{sub 5})Cl] (1) and the neutral terminal arylimido complex ({eta}{sup 5}-C{sub 5}Me{sub 5}){sub 2}U(N-2,4,6-t-Bu{sub 3} C{sub 6}H{sub 2}) (8) have been determined. The later compound represents the first f{sup 2} analog of the known d{sup 2} group 6 organoimido complexes of the general formula (C{sub 5}H{sub 4}R){sub 2}M(=N{sup t}Bu)(M = Mo or W) 54 refs., 5 figs., 4 tabs.
