This project studies the {open_quotes}particle pressure,{close_quotes} which may be thought of as the force exerted by the particulate phase of a multiphase mixture, independently of those exerted by other phases. The project is divided into three parts. Two of these are experimental studies to measure the particle pressures generated in gas and liquid fluidized beds, using special probes developed especially for this purpose. The last part involves measuring the growth and propagation of instabilities, and using a generic stability model, back out the values of all the normally modeled terms (revealing information about both particle forces and particle fluid interactions).
