EPRI EMF exposure database: University of North Carolina (UNC) electrical utility worker data set. Final report
- T. Dan Bracken, Inc., Portland, OR (United States)
This document describes the University of North Carolina (UNC) Electrical Utility Worker Data Set containing the measurement data collected during an epidemiologic study of leukemia and brain cancer mortality among nearly 139,000 men employed at five US electric utilities. The project was sponsored by EPRI. The data were supplied to the EPRI EMF Exposure Database by the original researchers at UNC. The epidemiological study`s exposure assessment was ultimately based on magnetic field personal exposure data collected using a 3-axis accumulating magnetic field exposure system (AMEX-3D). This instrument was chosen primarily to facilitate distribution and return of data recorders through company mail systems. The data collection effort resulted in over 2,800 successful work days of data. In addition to this primary AMEX data, Electric and Magnetic Field Digital Exposure System (EMDEX) data loggers were also deployed, resulting in about 700 work days of time-series magnetic field data with a sampling interval of 10 seconds. A little over half of the EMDEX data are accompanied by activity information that was recorded by an observer on a log sheet. The activity information associates periods of measurement with one of 14 task codes. Finally, supplementary AMEX data were collected concurrently with some of the EMDEX data.
