            <title>Nobel Prize in Chemistry for seminal work related to ribosome, now a major target for new antibiotics</title>

                <![CDATA[<img alt="Ribosome" align="left" border="0" src="http://www.osti.gov/accomplishments/images/Ribosome_cap.jpg"><br />
Venkatraman R. Ramakrishnan, Thomas A. Steitz, and Ada E. Yonath were awarded the 2009 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their seminal research related to the <a href="http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/2009/press.html">ribosome’s translation of DNA information into the code of life</a>. The research by all three winners was <a href="http://www.anl.gov/Media_Center/News/2009/news091007a.html">conducted in part</a> at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at <a href="http://www.anl.gov/">Argonne National Laboratory</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramakrishnan and Steitz research was also <a href="http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/pr/PR_display.asp?prID=1016">conducted in part</a> at the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS) at <a href="http://www.bnl.gov/">Brookhaven National Laboratory</a>. Additionally, Steitz conducted research at the Advanced Light Source (ALS) at <a href="http://www.lbl.gov/">Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;Ramakrishnan also <a href="http://www.ornl.gov/info/press_releases/get_press_release.cfm?ReleaseNumber=mr20091007-00">spent the early part of his career at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory High Flux Isotope Reactor.</a> The three Laureates have all generated 3D models that show how different antibiotics bind to the ribosome. These models are now used by scientists in order to develop new antibiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives and decreasing humanity's suffering, according to the Nobel Laureate <a href="http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/2009/press.html">press release</a>. Considered one of the &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.utexas.edu/faculty/council/2003-2004/memorials/prigogine/prigogine.html&quot;&gt;founders of complexity science&lt;/a&gt;, Ilya Prigogine received the &lt;a href=&quot;http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/chemistry/laureates/1977&quot;&gt;Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1977&lt;/a&gt; for &quot;his contributions to nonequilibrium thermodynamics, particularly the theories of dissipative structures.&quot; According to The Univeristy of Texas at Austin, Prigogine developed the concept of &quot;dissipative structures&quot; to describe the coherent space-time structures that form in open systems in which an exchange of matter and energy occurs between a system and its environment. He was a leader in the fields of nonlinear chemistry and physics, and his research helped create a greater understanding of the role of time in the physical sciences and biology.
