DOE OSTI Launches PIDs@OSTI.GOV

10/04/2022

The Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (DOE OSTI) offers services and support for assigning and using persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research components such as data, software, text documents, awards, people, and organizations.  PIDs deliver value to the broader research community by enabling greater discovery and reuse of research outputs through unique identification and providing appropriate credit through citation and identifying contributors.  PIDs also increase interoperability through resolvable links and robust metadata and facilitate impact and evaluation through linked research components.  With the recent launch of PIDs@OSTI.GOV, federal agencies and researchers can find general information about PIDs, details about the PID services OSTI provides, and community resources.

OSTI provides PID assignment services for research outputs.  Both the DOE Data ID Service and the Interagency DOI (IAD) Service assign DOIs to data objects produced by DOE and other federal researchers.  DOIs for software can be obtained through DOE CODE, and DOIs for text documents are assigned through E-Link, OSTI's research output submission system.  OSTI provides the Award DOI Service as a way for DOE funding offices, national laboratories, and user facilities to assign DOIs to awards, grants, and contracts.  OSTI also leads the US Government ORCID Consortium, a mechanism for DOE and other federal agency organizations to become ORCID members and utilize their infrastructure.  All of these services are detailed at PIDs@OSTI.GOV.

For people and organizations already using OSTI PID services, registration for a PIDs@OSTI.GOV account will provide users additional resources once logged in.  The available resources when logged in will depend on the OSTI PID services the user utilizes.  An account is not needed to access the publicly available information found on PIDs@OSTI.GOV.  Users should only register for an account if they use one of OSTI's PID services or are part of one of OSTI's PID communities.
